MONTEREY, CA – APRIL 17, 2017- Gathering for Women- Monterey is excited to announce a $500,000 gift from the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation for the purchase of a permanent facility. While Gathering for Women-Monterey has not been able to locate a site as of yet, “this gift will certainly help us as we continue our quest for a building in the area,” said President and founding member, Carol Greenwald.
Nicole Baran, Executive Director of the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation said, “Our goal is to fund solutions for each of the barriers that women and girls face. Homeless women are often survivors of relationship abuse and are exposed to sexual harassment or assault on the streets, in addition to the cold and hunger. We are proud to partner with Gathering for Women to provide a safe space for women to access resources for a better life.”
The gift was announced April 6 at the ribbon cutting for the organization’s new Service Center near downtown Monterey. The Service Center opened March 1, 2017, and provides homeless women with services and resources three days a week, while a hot lunch for homeless women is served at a different facility one day a week and nonperishable food for anyone in need is offered three days a week at yet another facility.
Gathering for Women-Monterey was founded in 2014 as a refuge for homeless women. They are working towards purchasing a permanent facility to consolidate their programs into a drop-in Day Center with one-stop for resources serving homeless women on the Monterey Peninsula.
The Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation was founded in 2007 to create and support innovative strategies for eliminating obstacles facing marginalized populations, with an emphasis on improving the lives of women and girls and promoting educational equality for all community members.
